LOS ANGELES, California — The Illinois State Redbirds (3-1) upset Long Beach State (2-3) with tough defense at the opening match of the Gulf Coast Showcase, 52-61 on Monday afternoon. Dalton Banks led the Redbirds with 15 points to lead all scorers along with a career high six steals and Jon Kinzinger added 10 points. LBSU never led and was behind by eight at the half due to a slow-paced match that decreased the rate of total shots taken on average.
Long Beach State turned the ball over 21 times and got into team foul trouble with 23 and only attempted five free throws.
Messiah Thompson led Long Beach State with 10 points and Lassina Traore added 15 boards with eight points.
