Long Beach State basketball cancels match against Hope University due to COVID-19

​LOS ANGELES, California — The Long Beach State men’s basketball team canceled its Tuesday night game home against Hope University because of COVID-19 rules at Long Beach State University.

Hope International University is a private Christian university, in Fullerton, California. Hope University is a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) program in the Golden State Athletics Conference.

Long Beach State University (3-7) also canceled matches with La Sierra University on Dec 18. and University of San Diego Dec. 20. La Sierra plays in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and University of San Diego competes at the NCAA Division I level. La Sierra University is a private Seventh-day Adventist university in Riverside, California. San Diego is a private Roman Catholic university in San Diego, California.

Long Beach State's Big West Conference opener on Dec. 30 at Cal Poly (SLO) is still scheduled at the moment.

Long Beach State falls to No. 16 USC, 73-62

​LOS ANGELES, California —  Long Beach State was tied with No. 16 USC at the half, 38-38. The Beach was set to have a 3 point halftime lead before Drew Peterson's three pointer at the buzzer. Undefeated No. 16 USC, improved to (10-0) in the non conference match. 

Long Beach State University, could have won with a higher 3-point shooting percentage along with a better free throw shooting percentage. USC shifted to a zone defense to end the first half with a tie. Long Beach State led by as many as 5 points early in the first half. USC turned the ball over at a high rate and committed many fouls. USC, took over in the second half with a 14-0 run and never looked back. 

“They came out in the second half and we missed a couple of good looks,” Long Beach State coach Dan Monson said. “Then it snowballed and they took control of the game. We kept fighting and we had an opportunity, but they were better than us when they needed to be.” Coach Dan Monson is a three time Big West Coach of the Year and holds the best all time record for a coach at Long Beach State University.

Drew Peterson, the guard from Illinois scored 15 for USC. Isaiah Mobley had the best all around performance for USC with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 assists.  

Joel Murray scored 14 points for Long Beach State and the senior from Louisiana, Colin Slater scored 12 points. 

Long Beach State has lost 11 in a row to PAC-12 teams and is 0-2 against ranked teams.

Long Beach State wins big 102-69 over Bethesda

LOS ANGELES, California —  Long Beach State's two game losing streak came to an end with a 33 point win over the Bethesda University Flames. Bethesda University is a private Christian university located in Anaheim, California. 

Long Beach State (3-6) dominated Bethesda University of Anaheim, 102-69, on Wednesday night at the The Walter Pyramid.

Sam Skipper of the Bethesda University Flames led all scorers with 25 points. 

Senior, Colin Slater, led Long Beach State with 21 points, 3 rebounds, and 7 assists. Jordan Roberts added 20 points. 

Aboubacar Traore, a freshman, scored 11 points and grabbed 20 boards with a solid dunk at 0:40 during the first half for Long Beach State.

Loyola Marymount beats Long Beach State 77-74

LOS ANGELES, California—  Long Beach State (2-6) fell to 0-2 at home to Loyola Marymount University (5-3) at The Walter Pyramid. Joel Murray was fouled with 57 seconds to go with a push from behind and the referee refused to call a foul with LMU up 73-69. The no-call in front of the referee's face, perhaps, cheated Long Beach State out of a victory at home. The Beach is now on a two game losing streak. 

Long Beach State shot 41% from behind the arc and 80% from the charity strike. Long Beach State, lead by 7 at the half. Four Long Beach State players scored in double digits. Joel Murray was Long Beach State's top scorer with 19 and Jordan Roberts had the best all around performance with 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. 

Loyola Marymount University's Joe Quintana led all scorers with 20.
