LBSU falls to San Diego State

LOS ANGELES, California— The San Diego State University Aztecs, of the Mountain West Conference won at home in Valejas Arena 72-47. San Diego State University has now defeated Long Beach State in 15 of the last 16 meetings. San Diego State (5-2) has won seven straight against Long Beach State (2-5). Overall San Diego State has a 39-22 record for the all-time series.

Long Beach State's big three did not score in double digits as individuals this match. Since, Dec. 21, 2004, San Diego State has won 23 consecutive games against teams in the Big West Conference. 

Up next for Long Beach State is Loyola Marymount University (4-3) at the Walter Pyramid on Dec. 4, 2021.

Long Beach State Beat Wright State 85-76 to Complete the Naples Invitational Tournament

LOS ANGELES, California— Long Beach State closed the Naples Invitational tournament with the w, in the Moe Kent Family Fieldhouse in Naples, Florida which, has a seating capacity of 1200. With 3:25 to go, during the first half, Long Beach State had gone on a 11-0 scoring run. Long Beach State's big three Joe Hampton, Joel Murray, and Colin Slater combined for 22 points during the first half. At the end of the first Long Beach State was ahead, 34-28. 

The Wright State Raiders went on a 6-0 run the first two minutes of the second half to even up the match with Long Beach State. At the 17:26 mark Joe Hampton and Colin Slater entered the game with Long Beach State up,  36-34. 

A media timeout was called at 10:30 with Wright State leading,  53-47. 

An 8-2 run started for Long Beach State at the 9:25 mark, which led to a tie 57-57. Jadon Jones, came up big with two quick 3-pointers, one to tie and the second to take the lead for Long Beach State 60-57. Long Beach State, pulled away to close out the tournament with a win, 85-76. 

Long Beach State's big three finished with 56 of 85 points. Jadon Jones scored 11 points and grabbed five boards coming up big in the second half with three 3-pointers. 

Wright State was 6-for-21 with 3-pointers, starting off hot. However, Long Beach State was 5-of-17 behind the arc inching by the Raiders with a higher three-point shooting percentage. Long Beach State also, had the higher shooting percentage from the charity strike going 20-for-24. Perhaps, the win would have been by double digits had Long Beach State, had five less turnovers totaling 15 with Wright State only having 11 turnovers. Wright State's Grant Basile and Tanner Holden scored 21 points each. 

UP NEXT: Long Beach State (2-3) faces San Diego State (3-1) of the Mountain West Conference at Viejas Arena on November 30, 2021 at 7:00 PM PST. Long Beach State does not play a game until November, 30 well, San Diego State has a match with Georgetown tomorrow, giving Long Beach State an advantage.

Long Beach State Loses by 37 to Murray State

LOS ANGELES, California— Murray State led by 27 at the half and ended up blowing out Long Beach State by 37, 80-43. Tuesday's tourney match was the first meeting in history for Long Beach State and Murray State. The Murray State Racers are on a six game winning streak against California teams dating back to 2010. 

​The Long Beach State men's basketball team is on a four game losing streak. Long Beach State lost it's second game in a row in the Naples Invitational tournament, at the Moe Kent Family Fieldhouse, in Naples, Florida.

Joel Murray was Long Beach State's leading scorer Tuesday with 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists. 

KJ Williams had 29 for the Murray State Racers leading all scorers. 

UP NEXT: Long Beach State (1-4) is set for it's final Naples Invitational tournament match on Wednesday at 9 a.m. PST against Wright State (1-4).

Expect the losing streak for Long Beach State to end against Wright State with a double digit win.

Missouri State defeated Long Beach State in first round tournament match

LOS ANGELES, California— Missouri State (3-1) routed Long Beach State (1-3) 92-66, in the first round of the Naples Invitational tournament, at the Moe Kent Family Fieldhouse, in Naples, Florida. The Missouri State Bears were up by 30 points at the half, 55-25. Joe Hampton fouled out and scored 15 points plus three rebounds for Long Beach State.

The Bear's defense stopped Long Beach State's offensive combo of Joel Murray and Colin Slater. Off the bench, for Long Beach State, Jadon Jones scored 12 points with four 3-pointers. Long Beach State's bench came up big putting up 37 points.

Missouri State Bear's junior guard, Isiaih Mosley, came off the bench and led all scorers on 10-of-17 shooting, finishing with 23 points.

Utah Valley Spoils Opening Night at Walter Pyramid

LOS ANGELES, California— Utah Valley (2-1) needed overtime to overcome Long Beach State (1-2), by six points during the non conference loss. Joe Hampton returned with 13 points, three rebounds, and two assists. The big men in the post for Long Beach State had an elevated defensive presence matching up with Utah Valley.

Blaze Neild scored two, with 0:04 to go for Utah Valley, during regular play to force overtime 68-68. During overtime, Neild hit two three point shots during the final two minutes to hold off Long Beach State 84-78, at the Walter Pyramid, on Wednesday night.

Joel Murray, the former Division II All-American from West Texas A&M, put up 18 points, three steals, three assists, and two rebounds for Long Beach State. Colin Slater, chipped in 10 points and two rebounds. Fadaws Aimaq, scored 25 points for Utah Valley leading all scorers. 

Rebounds were the x factor, with Utah Valley having 45, and Long Beach State only grabbing 28. Long Beach State had 16 defensive rebounds in contrast to 26 defenisive rebounds for Utah Valley. Fadaws Aimaq, pulled down 16 rebounds for Utah Valley.

The next game for Long Beach State men's basketball, is November 22nd, at 5:00 pm, against Missouri State at the Walter Pyramid.

Long Beach State men's basketball falls to No. 2 UCLA 79-100

​LOS ANGELES, California--Long Beach State (1-1) scored the first four points and AP No. 2 UCLA (3-0) countered with a 9-0 run. UCLA followed with a 8-0 run, answered by a 14-0 run by Long Beach State during the first half.

Long Beach State guards, Joel Murray the transfer from NCAA Division II powerhouse West Texas A&M, shot 9-of-13 with 20 points against the Bruins during the first half. Colin Slater the transfer from Tulane, shot 7-of-7 from two and 3-of-3 from the behind the arc over the course of the first half for Long Beach State. Long Beach State shot 69% from the field during the first half with making 13 of 15 field goals to close the half. UCLA led 48-45 at the half.

Long Beach State could not stay hot the entire game, giving UCLA a scare during the first half. UCLA was scorching hot during the second half, with the Bruins active and dominate on offensive boards. 

The Bruins were down by as many as five during the first half. Apparently, the Bruin mystique at Pauly Pavilion kicked in with UCLA eventually coming up with the win. Unfortunately, at the end of the second half UCLA hit a triple digit score 100-79. Forward Joe Hampton was injured causing offensive problems for Long Beach State. 

Johnny Juzang, scored 25 points, with a 59.2 FG %, with a career high six assists, and four rebounds. Jules Bernard was efficient with no turnovers putting up 22 points, five rebounds, and seven assists for UCLA. Joel Murray finished with 30 points and Colin Slater scored 27, respectively for Long Beach State.

Assists were key, with UCLA having 22, and Long Beach State dishing out 11. Long Beach State had 25 turnovers resulting in 38 points for the Bruins. 

Former NBA great Brent Barry and MLB great Alex Rodriguez were in attendance at Pauly Pavillion. ​

Long Beach St. posts 95-89 OT win over Idaho

LOS ANGELES, California--Long Beach State kicked off the college basketball season against the Idaho Vandals on Wednesday night at the ICCU Arena, Moscow, Idaho. The Big Sky Conference member held a ceremony before the game started honoring legendary Idaho coach of the 70s and 80s Don Monson, father of Long Beach State men's basketball head coach Dan Monson.

 Joel Murray lead all scorers with 28 points for Long Beach State posting a 95-89 overtime win over Idaho Wednesday night the season opener for both teams. Colin Slater, Jordan Roberts, and Joe Hampton each scored 16 points for Long Beach State. 

The Vandals, Trevante Anderson scored a career-high 26 points with eight assists. Pepple put up 10 points plus numerous defensive stops in the second half with four fouls.

Long Beach State's Joel Murray fouled out with five. Idaho's Pepple, Smith, and Anderson had foul trouble with four each. 

The next game for Long Beach State men's basketball, is November 15th at UCLA.

Colin Slater impresses in LBSU exhibition win over Biola

LOS, ANGELES, California -- Fans got back out to the Walter Pyramid, at Long Beach State University for the first home game of the 2021-2022 season. 

LBSU dominated during the first half, with leads by as many as 24 points throughout the exhibition game. During the second half, Biola got the LBSU lead down to nine, but LBSU responded with a 9-0 scoring run at the 11 minute mark of the second half. 

Slater, a 6-foot-1 guard from New Orleans, Louisiana, was the leading scorer for LBSU with 17 points. Center Trever Irish established a dominant presence in the game slowing down the tempo at times. Slater and Murray led all scorers for the exhibition against Biola that LBSU won with a 82-65 victory.

The next game for Long Beach State men's basketball, is the first real game of the season on November 10th at Idaho.
