Before 3,866 at the Walter Pyramid, Long Beach State, ran the ball and should have won by 20, but ended up defeating Boise State 72-62. To Boise's defense they have been on a long road trip and had two monster unanswered runs of 11-0 & 9-0.  The 49ers dominated from the beginning, looking more like a top-25 team with each game this season.

T.J. Robinson had a monster night scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, to became the all time leader in rebounds for Long Beach State. Larry Anderson and Casper Ware had bad offensive performances overall. James Ennis dropped 16 points and dished out 6 assists, for a strong performance. Its not a matter of if but, when the 49ers offensive machine comes together I can't picture many teams that will be able to slow the 49ers down including, #7 Louisville who is up on the 49er's plate this Monday.

For now Coach Dan Monson is really only worried about Montana, due to the fact Montana is projected to win the Big Sky Conference. Last night's game was great because it established the fact that not just Casper Ware and Larry Anderson can score and beat you, T.J. Robinson and James Ennis will beat you too! The 49ers need to focus on improving two things team defense and turnover ratio.

Long Beach State started out fast and ran the ball to take an early 8 point lead in the first half. However, San Diego State was ready and able to run with the 49ers. The refs got whistle happy, and called way to many fouls in the first half, most of them on the 49ers. It did not help that Long Beach was also lost the rebound battle and turned the ball over way too many times. Overall both teams seemed to be tired, but if the 49ers had not turned the ball over they could have easily won by 8-10 points.

Larry Anderson had another outstanding performance putting up 25 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal, and 0 turnovers. Casper Ware had 26 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 turnovers. As a team the 49ers turned the ball over 23 times and were called for 26 personal fouls. The formula here is simple, the 49ers played well, just cut the fouls and turnovers by 50% as a team and there easily could have been a 49er victory yesterday.

During the second half the 49er's offense was not as potent as it needed to be and there were no calls and missed calls courtesy of the referees! With 3.3 seconds to play Casper Ware was fouled and made the 1 + 1 taking the 49ers into overtime. T.J. Robinson and Edis Dervisevic fouled out at the beginning of overtime making it a challenge for the 49ers to hang in OT. Maybe if the refs had not made so many bad calls these two may not have fouled out.

The 49er's next game is at home this Tuesday at the Pyramid vs. Boise State who just lit up Cal State Northridge by dropping 103 points and beating them by 42, will be considerable challenge for the 49ers. If the 49ers want the win they will need to control the game tempo and lose the sloppy play. The 49ers have the pieces to win, they just need to execute and make opponents play their game. Show the 49ers some love and come out to the game this Tuesday, Clipper Darrell will be there!

Long Beach State ran up and down the floor all night dominating #9 Pitt, with  an 86-76 upset victory on the road. JC transfer James Ennis had quite the coming out party, putting up 19 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals! With easily one of the biggest wins in program history, the 49er Basketball program is on the rise! As the game came to an end, most mid major programs would have start celebrating, LBSU walked off the floor like they had expected to win, Long Beach State is for real this year, tonight proved it

Pitt was leading by 3 early in the half, but Long Beach State took the lead and never looked back. During the first half the 49er's zone defense played a big role in upsetting Pitt's offense. Casper Ware hit threes early and often, the 49er team offense established an outside shot presence. T.J. Robinson put up 11 points and 8 boards, with Larry Anderson scoring 12 points, pulling down 3 rebounds, and dishing 7 assists.
Long Beach State led the entire second half, Pitt got within 6 points, but each time Pitt made a run the 49ers had an answer.

Casper Ware scored a career high 28 points including 4 three point baskets, in addition to 6 assists and 2 rebounds. Pitt's loss tonight was the first on their home court since Bucknell back in 2005. The 49ers may go in to the AP 25 after this win, but a victory against San Diego State this weekend should guarantee the 49ers a spot in the top 25. Overall tonight was a great team win and surely many people now know who Long Beach State is thanks to the upset and national coverage via ESPNU!

The Athletic Director position at Arizona State maybe opening up very soon according to reliable sources within ASU athletics. According to sources around athletics at ASU current AD Lisa Love is expected to be fired after the football team lost a game to Washington State. ASU is expected to court current Long Beach State AD Vic Cegles, once the opening becomes official.

Cegles was an assistant AD at ASU and if he were  looking to take a step up to the next level it would be perfect timing. Lisa Love may end up at Penn State where the football program will be feeling the effects of the child molestation scandal for the next 10 years. Ultimately Arizona State will let Lisa Love go so they can hire a new football coach. According to Jason Aula, who has been in Cegle's office, he has a picture of ASU's Rose Bowl appearance mounted and proudly displayed in his office. Long Beach State is a better university in so many ways, but ASU having a football program will be what leads Cegles away, and really can you blame the man? I say no, however King Alexander needs to talk about bringing back football if he wants to keep Cegles in Long Beach!

Clipper Darrell and Casper Ware

On Saturday, the Walter Pyramid had an electric environment, not only because it was homecoming or that there were over 4,300 people in attendance. Clipper Darrell, Clippers Fan # 1 famous for rooting for the Clippers well rocking a fly red and blue suit was in attendance to my surprise. Not only was Clipper Darrell very energetic, but also he was rocking a black and gold suit.

Clipper Darrell was kind of enough to give me an interview with him this evening by phone. Clipper Darrell told me what led him to Long Beach State initially was a tweet he sent out volunteering to attend college games due to the NBA lockout.  I asked him how Long Beach State Athletics has treated him in comparison to the Clippers.  Clipper Darrell stated, " Honestly I'm gonna tell ya though, the VP of marketing thanked me and made me feel right at home, I felt a little nervous, but he just told me, do my thing". For those who do not know the Clippers have made some poor PR moves with Clipper Darrell and have undervalued his spirit and contributions as Clipper Fan #1. Clipper Darrel said it felt a little different chanting for the black and gold, but the world class treatment by fans and the athletic department is what will be bring Clipper Darrell back.

Clipper Darrell also told me is a fan of Casper Ware's tremendous play and anticipates Casper Ware making the jump to the next level. Clipper Darrell told me had tried camping out at the Staples Center in protest of the NBA lockout, but was not allowed to camp due to AEG giving him the boot from Staples Center at night.

Long Beach State Basketball is clearly a program on the rise. With Clipper Darrell, temporary expansion of the Walter Pyramid may need to be considered for the long term. Attendance and program interest is higher then pass years by far. If the 49ers can pull off some upsets in the coming weeks, they could even be an AP top 25 team. Clipper Darrell will be back for the next home game and so should you especially if you were not able to make it to homecoming.

Go Beach!
