Jason R. AulaLOS ANGELES, California — Dan Monson was hired as head coach at Eastern Washington University of the Big Sky Conference replacing former head coach David Riley who signed with Washington State. After 17 seasons as head coach at Long Beach State Dan Monson was fired in lieu of the program's 10th NCAA tournament appearance in March Madness 2024. Dan began his coaching career in 1988 as University Alabama-Birmingham as a graduate assistant coach.
"Eastern Washington University is a huge part of Spokane County and our region. Throughout the search for our next men's basketball coach, it was important, for us, to identify a head coach who represented this area," Director of Athletics Tim Collins said. "While talking to Dan, it became clear that this region matters as much to him as Eastern does to it." Prior to Eastern Washington, at Long Beach State Dan Monson (275-273) won four coaches of the year awards, made four appearances in NIT, four Big West Conference championships, and NCAA tournament appearances in 2012 and 2024. Dan Monson (52-17) took Gonzaga dancing all the way to the Elite Eight at the 1999 NCAA tournament and Minnesota to the 2005 NCAA tournament and four appearances in the NIT with 118 wins and 106 losses from the 1999-00 through the 2006-07 seasons. Dan Monson's current career head coaching record stands at 445 wins and 396 losses. Dan Monson's father, Don Monson (216-186) all-time NCAA record, was head coach of Idaho guiding the Vandals to the Sweet 16 in the 1982 NCAA tournament and the 1981 NCAA Tournament. Dan is now the 20th head coach in Eastern Washington program history. |
