Long Beach State's season ended with loss to BYU

LOS ANGELES, California — ​Long Beach State (20-13) was defeated by BYU (23-10) 93-72, in the first round of NIT. The loss is the end of LBSU's postseason run. 

Joel Murray led all scorers with 24 points and Jordan Roberts had 16 points and six rebounds for LBSU.


BYU of the West Coast Conference went on a 21-0 run after a 57-57 second half tie. The Cougars had the match on cruise control thereafter to advance to the second round of NIT. 

Caleb Loher had a career-high and team-high of 20 points for the Cougars. Fousseyni Traore added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Long Beach State upset by CSU Fullerton and cheated by referees

​LOS ANGELES, California — ​LBSU was not able to get a final shot off during the last possession and ended up losing 72-71. The referees cheated Long Beach State (20-12) out of an NCAA Tournament berth due to multiple no foul calls in the final seconds of the match connected with LBSU not getting a final shot off. 

E.J. Anosike led CSU Fullerton (21-10) with 22 points and eight rebounds. The Titans make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018.

Joel Murray led all scorers with 24 points for Long Beach State. The Big West Conference player of the year Colin Slater scored 23 points. 

Long Beach State moves on to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) to face BYU on Wednesday night at 6pm PT on ESPN+. The match will be the 12th between the universities and the first since the 2015 win for LBSU on the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. 

Long Beach State's last Big Dance appearance was in the 2011-2012 season.

LBSU defeats UC Santa Barbara to reach Big West tourney championship match

LOS ANGELES, California — Long Beach State (20-11, 13-3 Big West Conference) clinched an appearance in the Big West Conference tournament final with a 67-64 win on a buzzer beater 3-pointer from freshman Jadon Jones. UC Santa Barbara (17-11, 8-5 Big West Conference) led by as many as 11 during the first half Friday night at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada. LBSU needed tough full court defense to cool off the Guacho's hot shooting all night. 

Long Beach State's Colin Slater had a career-high 30 points with three assists and three rebounds. Aboubacar Traore scored 12 points and had nine boards. 


UC Santa Barbara's Ajay Mitchell had 11 points and five rebounds. Mitchell who hails from Belgium was named the 2021-2022 Big West Conference freshman of the year. Ajare Sanni and Miles Norris scored 15 points each for the Guachos.

Long Beach State moving on to the Big West Conference tourney semifinal

LOS ANGELES, California — Long Beach State (19-11, 12-3 Big West Conference) advanced to the Big West Conference tournament semifinal with a 72-61, win against CSU Bakersfield (8-19, 2-12 Big West Conference) Thursday afternoon at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada. The tourney is the 6000 seat Dollar Loan Center's first event, which cost the City of Henderson $84 million to construct. The Dollar Loan Center is the host of the Big West Conference Tournament through 2025. 

“Two more to go,” Murray said. “Bakersfield got some great looks early, but we just stayed together. We know if we take care of the ball and avoid turnovers, we can play the way we want to."

LBSU's Joel Murray had the best all-around performance leading all scorers with 25 points plus four assists and three rebounds. Ninth-seeded CSU Bakersfield led by as many as five points during the first half and top-seed LBSU needed a full court press to yield a 34-31 lead at the half.


“There’s a lot of trust on this team. We always go over our mistakes after a play and regroup as a team, and the coaches allow us to play through our mistakes,” Murray said. 

The Roadrunner's were led by Justin McCall who scored 19 points and Cameron Smith chipped in 14 points. 

“We knew we weren’t playing at the pace we wanted,” Roberts said. “Once we got into our game, we started going on runs.”

The senior from Bakersfield, Jordan Roberts added 16 points for Long Beach State. Big West Conference player of the year Colin Slater was limited to only seven shot attempts and only scored five points. Long Beach State is only two wins away from its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 years. 

“I told the guys I’m giving them all of May to rest,” he said with a grin,” said Monson.


Coach Dan Monson is in his 15th season as Long Beach State's head coach and was named the 2021-2022 Big West Conference coach of the year.

Long Beach State seals Big West Conference championship in OT, 73-72, with clutch free-throws from Jadon Jones

LOS ANGELES, California — Long Beach State (18-11, 12-3 Big West Conference) sealed the Big West Conference championship with a 73-72 overtime win over UC Riverside (16-11, 9-6 Big West Conference) Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid with Jadon Jones making two free-throws to take the lead with 0.9 second left. The Highlanders led LBSU 35-31, at the half, but got into foul trouble in the second half and overtime. 

UC Riverside's sophomore Zyon, Pulling scored 24 points and had seven rebounds for the Highlanders. 

Joel Murray led all scorers with 26 points and, Jordan Roberts added 20 points.

Long Beach State is the first seed in the upcoming Big West Conference tournament in Henderson, Nevada. LBSU officially clinched its first Big West Conference championship since 2012. LBSU's last Big West Conference tournament championship was in 2013.

LBSU defeats UC Davis with Slater's 3-point buzzer beater

LOS ANGELES, California — Long Beach State (17-11, 11-3 Big West Conference) clinched the Big West Conference title with the 68-65 win over UC Davis (12-9, 5-5 Big West Conference) Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid with 1444 in attendance. LBSU's conference title secures a first-place seed in the upcoming Big West Conference tournament in Henderson, Nevada. 

UC Davis was up by seven points at the half and held the lead through the second half with 11:36 to go. Ultimately, the Aggies turned the ball over at high rate, got into foul trouble, and gave away too many steals resulting in Long Beach State taking the lead. With under ninety seconds to go, Aboubacar Traore had a putback dunk to put LBSU up 65-60 and Colin Slater closed the Aggies out with a buzzer beater three-pointer.

LBSU's Aboubacar Traore had the best all-around performance with 14 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists plus two steals and a block. Jadon Jones scored 21 points with five rebounds. 

The Aggie's sophomore from France, Kane Milling scored 14 points and took six rebounds.
