LOS ANGELES — Gorjak Gak scored 26 points leading all scorers and the Cal Baptist Lancers routed Long Beach State 96-75 on Saturday night for their program's fourth straight victory to start the season. Micheal Carter III and Isiah Washington were Long Beach State's top offensive scorers combining for 30 points.

Although Long Beach State lost last night the program made big personal regains in the non conference game. Originally seniors Colin Slater and Drew Cobb last year decided to opt out for the 2020 - 2021 season. Slater and Cobb decided to opt in for the second semester of the season and suited up with team against Cal Baptist (7-4).  Long Beach State (3-5) had it's last two games canceled due to health and safety reasons connected with COVID-19.

“I’ve never seen a team (in) the second half just kind of break and not have any confidence in what we’re trying to do,” Monson said. “And you just can’t play five individuals against a good team. And they’re a team, you know? And we just got frustrated and weren’t able to stay together.”

Long Beach State had a high shooting percentage for the game above 50%, but Cal Baptist dictated the tempo of play because of dominate big man Gorjak Gak. The game was close at halftime, but missed free throws by Long Beach State and lack of defense made Cal Baptist and WAC look great in the win unfortunately. “We’ve just gotta grow as a team; we just break too easy,” Monson said. “We were up four, five right before the half and they gave up a couple of baskets and ended up down two at the half.”

Earlier this week on Monday, the Long Beach State men’s team was cleared to return to practice. LBSU (3-4, 2-2) has had an unpredictable season due to the impact of COVID-19. “When you have three of them come up positive, you’re feeling like if we can get back we’ve dodged a bullet,” LBSU head coach Dan Monson said. “The way everyone has been testing and everything, it just can’t always go in your favor. It’s the odds.”

In December and through present the Beach has had unfortunate medical problems with COVID-19 that have been like a roller coaster with false positive and positive results. Roberts and Washington have stepped up for a season of basketball in which anything can happen! Long Beach State added a non-conference game at Cal Baptist on Saturday. The next scheduled conference game is against UC San Diego on Jan. 29.
